interview tips

talk the talk
An interviewer wants to get to know you; your likes, your dislikes and what you can bring to the company and to the team. But don't let clammy hands take over. An interview is like two way traffic; you not only "show case" your potential but you can also find out what's in it for you. Approach an interview well and you'll walk away able to make informed decisions!

research
Know your stuff. Look at the company website, search the news for recent articles and on information relevant to the sector. Show them you have relevant understanding and you show them you have interest.

small talk
We hear it all the time, "people employ people". Be prepared to present your knowledge on current affairs and events in general discussion. Make sure it's relevant, current, and you can back it up. Small talk can go a long way in helping build a big impression. To help you stay up to date, check out the small talk page of our site.

ask
Stand out in the crowd by asking questions. Prepare at least five good questions you can ask in your interview which not only demonstrates your interest in the job but your knowledge of the industry. For example, if the field you are working in is breaking new ground, ask them whether they have plans for expansion; similarly, if there is a downturn in the market, ask them what plans they have to sustain and build market share.

be open minded
Keep your options open. You may find a juicy contract before the right permanent role comes along. The road ahead has more than one path you can take, keep your mind open to all opportunities and the experiences you can gain from them. Have your destination in mind but be open to the journey.

'fess up
Be honest. If you are an ambitious person, say so. You could be just what the employer is looking for. By the same token if other attributes of your personality need to be met or stimulated, then fess up. A real and genuine presentation will help you succeed in your next role.

smile
It's the universal language that helps put everyone at ease. It makes sense to use it.
